Garden E022009

The low wire fence has been set up around the garden to keep out the rabbits. It probably won’t do anything to deter the squirrels and we have already caught the red breasted robin poking around in there. The lettuce has shot up and we are able to cut some everyday. It hasn’t been enough to make a whole salad but it is plenty to mix with our favorite store bought romaine. The arugula has such a distinct fragrance and tastes amazing sautéed with the spinach. I like to cut the leaves of the spinach when they are still small and tender and sauté those with olive oil, salt and pepper and a little bit of parmesan cheese for creaminess.

We’ve planted potatoes, sweet peas, and carrots. Our roto tilling neighbor came over after we planted the carrots and informed us that they were too close together so we dug them up, pulled them apart, and put them back into the ground with plenty of leg room.

Even though the ground has been thoroughly tilled grass still keeps pooping up and we have to rake it about twice a week, pulling out all the clumps along with all the other weed stowaways. We installed a sprinkler on the corner of the garage that stays on for 10 minutes with the push of a button. Now every morning my dad pushes the button before leaving for work and I push it every afternoon after we weed the garden. The self pollinating black berry bush has sprouted beautiful white flowers and the current bush has small clusters of berries popping up still green and quite small.

Once Memorial Day has passed we know we’ll be safe from frost. That’s when we’ll pick up the daintier plants such as tomatoes and peppers. We’ll probably fill the rest of the garden with beans, squash, cucumbers and other salad fixings like radishes.
